Becoming a mom has been a life-changing experience. It’s been almost nine months since my daughter was born and in that time I have discovered a lot about taking care of her but I have also learned a lot about myself.
1. Now More Than Ever I Don’t Care What Others Think
I’ve always been a person that “goes against the grain” and did what I wanted to do and not what someone else thought I should do. Now that I’m a mom it’s only magnified my feelings about not caring what others have to say, think or feel about me.
When it comes to parenting I find that people ALWAYS have something to say. As all moms know we are judged constantly by strangers, family, other moms and even friends. Some people aren’t going to like me and will have an issue with decisions I make, and you know what- that’s OK.
I’m not a perfect mother but according the random people in Target, Homegoods and other stores, I have such a happy baby, so I figure that I’m doing a great job. When I look at my daughter and see how happy, healthy and loving she is, I know that my husband and I are doing a good job as her parents.
2. I Love & Respect My Mom Even More
Motherhood has made me appreciate everything my mom has done for me and also made me so grateful that my mom is still here. There are so many times that I took my mom for granted growing up. I used to feel that my mom was overbearing and sometimes smothering and of course, “All in my business” LOL. I get it now, I truly understand why she did the things that she did.
My mom is not perfect, no one is, we had our ups and downs but I always knew that my mom had my back and regardless of what I did or said she’s never stopped loving me.
Now that Im a mom I see exactly how much she sacrificed for me and always put her children first. I see that she always had my best interests at heart and wanted the best for me. I truly appreciate the love and compassion she poured into me.
Aubrey will probably think that I am smothering, overbearing and mean but as long as she knows that I love her unconditionally, that’s all that really matters.
3. It Has Made Me A Better Person
Being a mom has made me so much more aware of everything and everyone around me. I am more conscious of others feelings and there are more things that I take into consideration. Knowing that my daughter is looking up to me and literally soaking in everything that I do and say has really changed me.
Everything we do as parents we do to make our children’s lives better. If I want Aubrey to have love, compassion, patience, be gentle, understanding and kind I have to exemplify those things.
4. You Cannot Prepare To Be A Parent
I do not care how many people you talk to and how many stories you hear, you can’t prepare for parenting. You can all of the diapers, wipes, onesies, diaper cream, bottles, lotion and pacifiers and you still aren’t prepared. Parenting is so much more than having the physical things to take care of baby.
Mentally I was not prepared to be a parent. I honestly didn’t know what to expect. I bought baby books, that I didn’t even read, because I thought I could use them as an “instruction manual” lol. When Aubrey was born, it hit me like a ton a bricks that I was officially responsible for the well being and care of this little human. Overwhelmed is an understatement of how I felt.
Babies don’t come with instructions and no baby is the same as another. You seriously have to trust your instincts and learn as you go. What works for someone else may not work for you and that’s ok. Im still learning and winging it a lot of the time and it has been a very humbling experience.
5. I Love Taking Pictures
Prior to having Aubrey I could care less about pictures. Now I love it and I’m obsessed. I have a package from Shutterfly being delivered at least once a month with the previous weeks’ photos.
I personally feel like you can never take enough pictures. I have a baby book for her that I put milestone pictures, special moments, embarrassing moments and random pictures in for her. I can’t wait until she’s older and she can look through her book and see all of the memories we have captured of her and us together.
** If you have the Shutterfly App on your phone they have tons of free offers monthly. My favorite is the unlimited free prints for 4X4 and 4X6 photos, you just have to pay shipping.
